The goal of our product, sleep hound, is to provide consumers with a safe reliable way to prevent them from falling asleep. Specifically, drivers wearing the device should be alerted when they are no longer focusing which will help lessen the number of causalities caused by drowsy driving.
Drowsydriving.org, a National Sleep Foundation, quotes that 60% of adult drivers (roughly 168 million people) have admitted guilt to driving drowsy behind the wheel in the past year. Approximately one-third of them admitted to fallen asleep on the wheel and 13% of them admitted to have done it at least once a month. 10 million have admitted of been guilty of either been in an accident or close to one from dozing off or been too tired to drive. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that about 100,000 police-reported crashes each year are from drowsy drivers, resulting in an estimation of 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in monetary losses (National Sleep Foundation, N.D.)

Falling
asleep at inappropriate times is an ongoing problem, especially while driving
on the road where others can be put in danger. While changing one’s sleeping
schedule is the most efficient way to eliminate the problem, it is sometimes
not possible for many. Therefore, our alternative solution is to construct a
device that can be worn around the head to detect when the wearer has drifted
off to sleep, and awake him/her using a audible alarm or vibration feedback.
